July 6, 2014: What Is Your Life Worth?

Let us pray: Dear Lord, you have set us free from the slavery of sin. You have invested Your life blood to buy back our souls. Today we ask that You give us the ability to live up to new high status as members of Your holy family. And we ask You to always remind us not to use our new-found freedom as a license to revert to our old ways. Amen

GRACE MERCY AND PEACE ARE YOURS FROM CHRIST, OUR LOVING LORD

TEXT: Romans 5: 6-11

Dearly Beloved By Christ:

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE WORTH? There are many ways to answer that question. If you died right now, what would be the net worth of your estate? That’s one simplistic measure of your worth. Likewise, what would it cost your employer to replace you? That would be another benchmark. What does your insurance company think your life is worth? What will it cost them when you pass on? Considering the millions spent on some hospital patients and the paltry sums spent on others, obviously some people are considered worth more than others. We spend millions of dollars per patient to keep long-time HIV inflicted people alive, but lesser sums when it comes to stroke victims. Are some worth more than others?

What is your life worth to your family? Count the emotional cost. Is a young mother’s life worth more than an 80 year old woman? Is a soldier’s life worth more than a titan of industry, or vice-versa? How about an aborted baby? What are they worth in modern America? Since Roe vs. Wade, we have had 57 million abortions in America. World-wide 50 million are killed each year. Measure that against the 655,000 soldiers killed in all the wars during our country’s founding. The estimated GDP gain of one baby saved from abortion is: 25 million dollars! The estimated future loss to date since 1973 due to abortion is: 55 trillion! And the cost of an abortion averages about $400. So, for $400 we lose, as a nation: 25 million per child and by 2040 the figure will have reached 400 trillion as a nation. Your share of this future loss comes in slightly under 1.3 million! These figures are from the Guttmacher Institute which studies such issues.

Human life is precious. Once it is gone, it is gone. That’s why we spend so much on health care. Yet, people are selfish. That’s why babies are merely “fetuses” or “embryos” and that’s why America turns a blind eye to this genocide. Considering the trends across America today, what do you think your life will be worth in 10 or 20 years?

Against this depressing backdrop shines the clear, bright light of this uplifting text penned by St. Paul. Here we see exactly what our lives are worth to God Almighty! “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Right there you see the uniqueness of Christianity when contrasted against all other world religions. Our lives are so valuable to God that He was willing to die to save us in and through His Son, Jesus Christ! Rarely, in love and out of love, we might be willing to do so for someone close to us. But He did it for His enemies, for us. Amazing…..

II

This truth of our justification, our being completely saved and forgiven by Christ, is the most amazing teaching and truth there ever has been or will be. It is the complete opposite of what we face in this world. It elevates humans to the infinite category of worth. So, what is your life worth?—Nothing more and nothing less than the life-blood of God’s Son!

“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

The easiest thing in life is to look at the negatives. I suppose it’s because, as sinners, we know human nature and we know just how awful we can be. But here, under the umbrella of God’s investment in us, it’s all positive! God’s anger against us is gone, kaput, forgotten, wiped away. That’s what Christ did on the cross by dying in our place. When that occurred, we were God’s enemies. We didn’t know Him and didn’t care about Him, other than being angry for letting “bad” things happen to us. But, God’s love still outstretched to us. It still was given to us and applied to our souls. He drew us into Himself.—That’s what reconciliation means. And the result is that we’re saved—to live in thanksgiving, appreciation, and joyfulness. We’re saved to “let our light shine.” We’re saved to boast about His goodness to us and all others—even those who don’t know such joy, yet.

Today is the weekend holiday of America’s birthday. It’s a time to celebrate, get silly, get serious, see the good and bad of our nation and to resolve to make a difference. How you go about such things will determine the future of our nation and the future of countless souls. God Almighty has freed you from the shackles of sin to engage in that great liberation. And it all begins by sitting down and counting the cost as to What Your Life is Worth. But, of course, now you know…..Amen
